It starts now…

For most of the 15 years I’ve been a software developer it has been my dream to strike out on my own and unleash the creative entrepreneurial energy I’ve kept locked inside. I watched and read with interest as the concept of the Micro-ISV made its way around the blogosphere. Many great product ideas have come and gone over that time.  Sadly all I have actually done is watch as others have spread their entrepreneurial wings while I’ve stayed warm and safe in my nest.

Recently I received an iPod touch as a gift. I’m in love. I am constantly amazed at the flexibility and usefulness of this little device. Using it on a daily basis has inspired me once again to try my hand at software development on my own time. For now I have no plans on quitting my day job but I am inspired by just how far this little enterprise could take me.

The bulk of my development experience revolves around developing desktop applications for the Microsoft Windows operating system. I did create one very small application for Mac OS X a few years ago and I’ve dabbled in web development, but my expertise and comfort zone are in windows application development. Pursuing a sideline business developing applications for the iPhone & iPod touch will provide unending opportunities for growth and learning. I envision this blog as a way to document all the new adventures, hurdles, and triumphs I encounter as I enter this new world of entrepreneurship, Mac computers and development, and starting my own Micro-ISV. Since this isn’t a completely new area for me I hope to share some of the knowledge I already have of interaction design and software development too. It is also my hope that as you follow along you can learn along with me or share some of your own lessons learned. If you have been thinking of taking the plunge as I have hopefully you too will take courage and begin an enterprise of your own.

Thanks for the encouraging words Peldi! I have to admit i was completely taken off guard finding a comment from you so quickly. In fact, my surprise prompted my first “lesson learned” post. I agree completely about starting being the hardest part. I do have a habit of coming up with lots of grand plans and ideas but never quite getting to the execution stage. My hope is that by starting this blog I’ll build up some accountability and hopefully it will serve as some additional motivation to keep going.

Thanks for the question about twitter. I hadn’t planned on doing that originally but now that you mention it I think I will. It’s so easy, Why not? Once I settle on a name for this business I’ll get that started too.
